mks_vir is the first and most iconic Polish antivirus software, originally created in 1987 by visionary programmer Marek Sell. The 2007 edition, commercially branded as mks_vir 2k7, represents a crucial redemption era for the brand. It was launched to rescue the software’s reputation after a disastrous 2006 release, packed in a distinctive metal box. The History and Origin
The 1987 Genesis: Marek Sell developed the software using Assembler after his own computer caught a virus that existing tools could not cure.
Floppy Disk Era: Early versions for DOS were distributed via mail by the company Apexim on 5.25-inch floppy disks with monthly definition updates.
Educational Virus Lexicon: Version 3.99 introduced a localized virus lexicon that visually and audibly safely demonstrated how popular Polish viruses behaved.
Corporate Peak: Sell founded MKS Sp. z o.o. in 1996. The software won Poland’s prestigious “Teraz Polska” award and dominated public institutions and schools. The Context of mks_vir 2007 (2k7)
The 2004 Tragedy: Founder Marek Sell passed away at age 53 in June 2004. His son, Mateusz Sell, took over management amidst heavy corporate infighting and aggressive competition from foreign giants like Norton and Kaspersky.
The 2006 Failure: The 2006 suite suffered from severe stability flaws and system slowdowns, which caused a mass exodus of its loyal Polish user base.
The 2007 Redemption: Built to restore consumer trust, mks_vir 2k7 featured a completely overhauled engine, vastly improved detection rates, and optimized system performance. It was highly praised by tech communities for its sleek aesthetic and stable footprint.
Hardware Expansion: In February 2007, the company leveraged the 2007 engine to build mks awangarda, a specialized Unified Threat Management (UTM) hardware firewall that won two “Złoty Bit” (Golden Bit) network security awards. The Decline and Modern Revival
Bankruptcy: Despite the success of the 2007 edition, internal corporate deadlock halted hardware production, leading to the bankruptcy of MKS Sp. z o.o. in 2010.
Arcabit Acquisition: Former MKS engineers who had branched off to form Arcabit purchased the intellectual property rights to mks_vir in 2011.
The Current Era: After several years in hiatus, Arcabit fully revived the brand with a new database architecture. Today, it operates as a suite of modern cybersecurity tools protecting Windows systems and mobile platforms via the mks_vir Android Antivirus on Google Play.
